Selecting a Scooter

Selecting the Scooter that is right for you!

Mobility scooters are a popular way for people with some mobility problems to get around in their homes, the grocery store, the shopping mall and other important areas in their neighborhood. If you are fatigued after walking to another part of your house or to your mailbox, you can still maintain your independence with the use of a fun and comfortable scooter.

People who benefit from having a scooter for mobility include people with multiple sclerosis, mild cerebral palsy and various forms of arthritis. The elderly and stroke survivors also find that scooters help get from here to there without using a product that looks like medical equipment!

Choosing the right scooter for you can be a daunting task.  There are many factors to consider.  With this in mind, here is a checklist to help you decide which scooter is right for you!  Of course, should you have any questions please do not hesitate to call our mobility experts and let us discuss your needs and recommend the scooters that best suit your needs

Your weight. Your weight is a primary factor in selecting what scooter is best for you.  Typically, the scooters classified as mid-size support weights up to 250 lbs.  The heavy duty scooters are best suited if you are (or plan to be) over 250 lbs.

Scooter dimensions. If you plan to use your scooter indoors, the size and turning radius of the scooter become important factors to consider.  If you have narrow hallways and tight corners take a look at our selection of transportable scooters.  Also note that 3-wheeled scooters typically have tighter turning radius than that of 4-wheeled scooters.

Scooter durability. Scooter durability and reliability are always a consideration, and our selection of power scooters have been specifically selected for their solid construction.  Having said this, some scooters are more suited for rugged outdoor use, while others are better for in-home use.  If you plan to use your scooter in uneven or rough terrain, consider purchasing a 4-wheel scooter.  These scooters tend to have more stability in these environments.

Transportation. Many of our customers want the freedom of taking their power scooters with them while traveling.  Be it simply to the grocery store or on extensive vacations, having your chair with you at all times is comforting, reassuring and great fun.  When selecting a transportable scooter, consider how you will transport the unit.  Many of our transportables can be disassembled into 3 pieces.  Consider how heavy the heaviest piece weighs.  This information is listed in the specifications for each scooter.

Options and Accessories. All power scooters have a list of optional accessories.  Some of these options, such as larger batteries impact the performance of the scooter.  Other options are there to assist the customer in carrying things such as crutches and oxygen tank holders, as well as groceries, personal items and coffee cups.  And still other accessories such as seat-belts address safety concerns.  Take a few moments to look through the list of accessories for the scooters you are interested in. Our mobility experts can assist you in selecting the options best suited to your needs.

The Tiller. When considering a power scooter, it is VERY important to consider any limitations you may have gripping the tiller. The tiller is like the handlebars of a bicycle. It can be moved forward for easy access , then moved back in place for when you are ready to drive on.  If you plan to use your scooter for extended periods of time, consider how comfortable you will be extending you arms for that time.  If this is a concern, take a look at our collection of power wheelchairs.
